Molyslip Copaslip - Calcium Free
Calcium Free Anti-Seize Paste - Helps prevent the formation of Hexavalent Chromium - Molyslip Copaslip
Recent H&S Guidance (Energy UK - Hexavalent Chromium Safety Bulletin Summary) and OEM Bulletins (Wärtsilä / ABB) have highlighted the possible formation of Hexavalent Chromium deposits when using calcium containing lubricant compounds on thermal assets under certain operating conditions.
Calcium compounds such as calcium fluoride, calcium hydroxide and calcium carbonate find use in general purpose anti-seize products but are most often found in components of “metal-free” ceramic anti-seizes. The calcium compounds can be used to modify the friction characteristics, anti corrosion properties and extend the upper operating temperature limit of the anti-seize product.
Hexavalent Chromium Cr(VI)/CH6 is a recognised toxin and carcinogen, which if ingested or inhaled may affect the respiratory system, kidneys, and liver. It can also cause dermatitis and severe irritation to the eyes.
Application parameters
Hexavalent Chromium presence occurs when three specific parameters are simultaneously satisfied:
1. Calcium containing product is present
2. Chromium Steel is present.
3. Temperatures greater than 300°C.
Where is Hexavalent Chromium Cr(VI) occurring
In the electricity generation sector, it has been identified that Hexavalent Chromium Cr(VI) is present on coalfired and CCGT generating sites. There is the potential for Cr(VI) to be present in areas such as; HP steam pipework, Gas Turbine combustor components, and Gas Turbine exhausts if calcium-containing insulation or anti-seize products are used. This can occur on CCGT or coal-fired plants.
The Solution
The simplest means to reduce this risk of generating Chromium (VI) when using anti-seize products is to utilize a product that is free form calcium compounds. Molyslip have taken action to remove calcium compounds from Ceramslip and Ferroslip products and present a complete range of calcium free anti-seize products.
